Rigid plastic PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) are the most popular types of plastic plumbing pipe.

The top end of the stack acts as a vent.

Codes vary and certain areas may not allow plastic pipe to be used.

Bend the float arm gently to adjust the water level; down to lower the level or up to raise it.

Adjust its chain connecting to the handle rod if needed.

Then tighten it down firmly with an adjustable wrench while holding the valve in place with another wrench.

Write down and/or lay out parts to remember their order.

With both augers, when the rod meets an obstruction in the line, tighten the handle and ram the snake into the clog — sometimes that’s all it takes to clear the line.
