When we think of the winter months, we associate it with snow, warm cups of coffee and misty evenings, but definitely not with plumbing problems. All of us had our own share of problems before. Either the water heater had refused to work, or the faucets have frozen. This fall, make sure that you take note of all the details, so that you do not face any such problems.

The water hoses which are positioned outside the house should be disconnected. If they are connected, the water will freeze and in turn the connecting pipes and faucets inside the house can freeze and break. Before winter sets in, you can check the faucets outside your homes. If they are showing signs of leaking or dripping, you should call a plumber immediately. Repairs are to be done before temperature falls under 0 degrees. If the pipes freeze, the water pressure inside the faucet can cause cracks. Even if the pipes are made of copper or steel, the mounting water pressure can cause severe damage. It ahs been noted that even a tiny crack will unleash almost 250 gallons of water.

If there are shut-off valves inside the house which leads to outside faucets, you should close them for the winters. After you close them, the water should be insulated. You can use the thermostat-controlled heat cables or heat tapes to cover the pipes that remain exposed. These tend to freeze and in order to avoid such a situation, you should take precautions well ahead. Water should be drained from the lines. Buy faucet insulation kit from home centers and cover the faucets outside. The pipes located in unheated areas like the crawl spaces or garages should

The leaks in windows and doors should be sealed properly so that cold air cannot come inside the house. The water heater is actually over-used during the winter months. Before winter sets in, you can flush the water, and remove the sediment deposits. Sediment deposits cause harm to a machine reducing its life span. Gallons of water should be drained from the faucet which is located near the bottom of the tank. You can check the pressure relief valve. If the valve is working properly, there will be a rush of hot water in the drainpipe. If you find any problem, you should call a professional plumber.

The temperature of the thermostat of the water heater should be set at 120 degree F. the pit and sump pump should be cleaned before winter. If pumps are exposed to the chill, it can freeze. If you are leaving home for longer periods, always remember to switch off the main water valve. The whole valve should be drained. The faucets should be opened at the lowest and the highest points in the house. If you want to spend your evenings close to the warmth of the fireplace and not worried about the clogged drains or frozen pumps, you should start taking preparations much ahead. It is better to winterize the house before you experience the first chill.
